One morning after I had woken up and was just lying there in the pause before the day, I had a vision. The vision was of two glowing balls rotating around each other, filling my field of vision. It was a very powerful experience, and I could still see it when I opened my eyes to check.  It was independent of my eyes as this proved, because it was there with eyes closed and eyes open. It also proved that I wasn't dreaming as normal dream images do not achieve this persistence, but when the same mental mechanism produces this stuff, they are called visions. I took a chance by opening my eyes to check, recognising that I might lose the experience by doing so, but I had to know how far it went. The image wasn't as strong when overlaid normal sight, but was unmistakably still there and rotating.

It is the absolute perfection of the experience that is astounding. The eyes do not follow the balls of light, it is just experienced like a video in front of you. The motion is utterly smooth, unlike anything that can be reproduced physically or artificially. The background is velvet smooth black, without any of the granular residue that can be noticed from visual processing. This is an image that is produced solely without sensory input. The best time to experience these phenomena is just before sleep, called hypnagogic, or just after sleep, called hypnopompic. These are the twilight zones where the dreaming mechanism is overlaid normal consciousness like augmented reality.

While I  was investigating this hypnopompic phenomenon of two perfect rotating glowing balls, I noticed that there was a blue area in the centre, and I mentally went towards it to go into it by strongly focusing my intention to do so, and as I did so I entered into a lucid dream (technically an out of body experience because I wasn't dreaming prior to it and was fully awake). Suddenly I was walking down a road, and instantly recognised that it was the same as being in a lucid dream. A dream when you know you are dreaming, and the most insane virtual reality experience you can ever have. The road I was walking down had hedges on either side and as I walked down the road I was thinking what I should do, as lucid dreams are always opportunities to discover secret stuff or play in, and here I was inside an ultra-realistic virtual world for me to explore and marvel at.

There was a house on the left side which I walked past, but then instead of carrying on walking I initiated free will within the dream and chose to investigate the house, and clambered up the bank and approached the house from the rear. There was instead of the house a derelict building there now (this aspect of things altering within the dream does not change whilst lucid), little more than the foundations, and I knew somehow that I had buried something there—eons before. I started to dig, but I was losing lucidity and came out of the lucid dream back to the rotating balls of light, which were now rotating a lot slower.

Such pseudo-hallucinations as these balls of light, are called phosphene imagery, and it is quite possible that everybody has had them, and even fairly frequently, but they are normally hidden from conscious awareness. When I first saw them, a part of me was saying "don't look", that it wasn't important, and to just ignore it. I had to very deliberately force myself to stay conscious of it, and I think that it happens a lot, but is usually filtered out. It doesn't fit within the normal waking matrix of experience, and without any pegs to hang it on, it is sifted out from our awareness.  Our whole experience is edited by the mundane mechanism of social expectation. There is an entire world of extraordinary extrasensory phenomena that is parallel to what we call real, and is happening all the time but we just ignore it. I think it is much more interesting than the real thing! From using neural feedback devices, I know that my brain has a natural tendency to the alpha/theta boundary of neural activity (about 8hz), and it is in this state that dream realm experiences exist; it is just about becoming conscious of them, becoming aware of the non-normal. I guess I'm just a dreamer.

I think it must be, that other people have also had this vision of two rotating lights, probably going back thousands of years to our very beginnings. Rather than it being two objects rotating individually, it is I think a field or layer that is rotating. Maybe the two balls have something to do with the two eyes which have become synchronized onto this field, I don't know, but I can detect the rotation of this field with my eyes closed normally, and witness a rotating bar which is very fuzzy and indistinct, but just about decipherable. Presently, as I write this and close my eyes, it is rotating clockwise, but it was rotating anti-clockwise during the hypnopompic episode. The period of rotation during normal waking is very slow at around 30 seconds for one revolution, and much faster at about one or two revolutions per second when experienced hypnopompically. This would mean there is an inverse relationship between brain frequencies and the vision. The slower theta brainwaves produce a faster rotation, and the more awake alpha/beta frequencies slow it down.

The Taijitu or Yin Yang symbol

I wonder whether the yin yang symbol is a diagram of the same experience and that it represents the rotating of two balls of light. I could be wrong, but the Taijitu (yin yang symbol), which also has origins in European culture too, such as Celtic designs etc, has obviously been around for a very long time (oldest known is four and half thousand years ago in China), and perhaps has its precedent in visions such as the one I had. It is a significant experience and one which is likely to have been had by other holy men/shamans etc through the ages. If you were to try and represent the experience in a static picture, the Yin Yang symbol would be the way I would do it, as it captures the moving aspect of it (you show movement in static representation by showing a trail), and it is its rotation that is what is most striking.

I have also equated the experience with the Ajna chakra . The word “chakra”, has its origins in circle (kirkos), and wheel, and signifies rotation, which would certainly fit the experience. The Ajna chakra is also associated with the colour blue, the number two, and the third eye, so I wonder if it is no coincidence that these characteristics exist of it, if the very original experience comes from this same transcendent source. The chakras are also associated with the Lotus plant, and the thing that is significant about this plant is that its leaves repel dirt, and are therefore clean and unsullied, with the purity that is associated with the divine. It is the purity of the experience that is most memorable and divine. It is very holy.

I have seen a great many of these rotating structures, with different configurations and number of “spokes” and varying rotation speeds. It is called “phosphene imagery”, which when they appear there is a part of me denying their presence and asking me to ignore them as they are not important and common; but they clearly are not normal to the state of consciousness or awareness that is viewing the experience. They are momentous and divine, and perhaps common to the mechanism producing them, but not at all to the normal life mode of awareness. The societal shroud that engulfs our lives does not provide any hooks for this stuff to hang itself on, and it is filtered out of our illusory normality. But this stuff is probably going on all the time under the veil of what we call reality; we're just not tuned into it.

20 years further on, and my development of Pentegraph has resulted in the physical performing of this vision which I call the Exwhykirkos, using luminous objects such as my hands, fingers or sticks in the dark, which in the mirror looks uncannily similar to the hypnopompic experience, and yet I have not tried to imitate it or consciously reproduce it, and it seems as if it might have been a strong visual premonition. Whether the vision was of the future, or it has been a subconscious influence to produce what I now do, I think are just two stories of the same path.
